Continuous Variable Quantum Key Distribution allows the communication of bit strings between two parties using quantum coherent states and heterodyne detection. This method promises a low-cost implementation and high performance results compared to discrete variable protocols as it uses standard telecommunication technology, such as Software Defined Radio (Universal Software Radio Peripheral), Mach-Zehnder modulators and balanced detectors. It has been proven to be secure against collective and general attacks and its main advantage when using free space channels is that coherent detection is less affected by solar background photons which limits daylight transmission in the discrete-variable counterpart.
