The high maintenance and / or repair costs of transport infrastructure could be reduced if Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) techniques are used. The development of new testing technologies and multifunctional materials together with information technologies can allow the design of low-cost, autonomous and remote assistance systems.
In recent years the G-CARMA group of ITEFI has been developing SHM systems. Among them, the patent “Embedded sensor for continuous measurement of mechanical resistance in cementitious structures”. The extension of this patent has been requested in the Dominican Republic among other countries.
The objective of this cooperation project is to support the DGA laboratory so that they can carry out the research that has to lead to a patent demonstrator developed for the monitoring of transport infrastructure. The demonstrator has to develop consists of the incorporation of micro / nanomaterial sensors in concrete structures, to turn it into an intrinsically sensor material. This will allow these structures to be monitored wirelessly and through non-destructive testing techniques.
