Jose Pedro Santos received his B.S.c (1987) and Ph.D. (1995) in physics from the University Complutense of Madrid. He has worked at the University of Milan (Italy); the Institute of Advanced Materials of the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (Ispra, Italy) and at the Electronics Department of the University Complutense of Madrid. Presently, he works in the Research and Development Gas Sensors Group at the CSIC as a tenured researcher. He has partipated in more than 20 research projects related to gas sensors and volatile detection instrumentation. He is co-author of more than 100 publications in international journals and congress proceedings about chemical sensors.

His main research areas are:

  • Resistive sensors: fundamental research, kinetics and electronic mechanisms of the gas-solid interactions in thin films and nanoparticles. Technological developments for the preparation and characterization of doped and undoped metal oxide sensors (MOX) based on the electrical conductivity modulation. Special interest is devoted to nanostructures (nanotubes, nanowires,…) capable to improve detection characteristics as sensitivity, stability and power consumption.
  • Gravimetric sensors (SAWs, cantilevers): preparation and characterization of gravimetric sensors with polymer and nanostructured sensing layers whose detection mechanism is based on resonant frequency change. Study of silicon compatible piezolectric substrates (AlN, ZnO, multilayers). SAW sensors for liquid detection.
  • Applications: sensor integration and pattern recognition methods for the development of artificial noses: Development of portable sensor array systems for applications in the environment, food, security or health areas (3 patents). Developing of portable, wireless platforms for resistive sensors.
