This contract with the company Newborn Solutions is part of a grant won by the aforementioned company in the RIS3 program of the Community of Madrid. The project proposes a study of high frequency ultrasound imaging (15-60MHz) in lymphocyte and neutrophil suspensions.
The objective of this study is to evaluate the capacity of ultrasound imaging techniques to distinguish both types of cells that, together, constitute the majority proportion of leukocytes present in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the presence of meningitis. The interest of being able to identify both types of cells lies in the possibility of non-invasively differentiating a viral meningitis, related to a greater number of lymphocytes than neutrophils, from a bacterial meningitis, in which the opposite happens when the infection progresses.
